Dentistry

Here at Grant Veterinary Care, we recommend each pet should have annual dental cleaning with surgical extractions if needed. Prior to scheduling a dental cleaning under general anesthesia, we recommend a consultation with our veterinarian so she can assess your pet’s mouth and discuss what degree of periodontal disease your pet has as well and an in depth conversation of what the dental cleaning will entail. Depending your pet’s periodontal disease your pet may have a few to several teeth surgically extracted. Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats.

BOAS

BOAS you ask?!?

While the name Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome sounds technical and complicated, it simply means pets that have a harder time breathing than "normal" dogs with longer noses due to their adorable smooshed faces. Because of this, they overheat more quickly and tend to breath with their mouths open. They sometimes easily tire after some play time and they tend to snort and snore. Additionally, during their lifetime (sometimes as young as 6-10 months) the tissue in their throats can become inflamed and swollen causing additional obstruction and increasing your pet's chance of surgical complications.

What are the underlying conditions that lead to BOAS?

  • Really small nostrils that looked pinched - Stenotic nares
  • Elongated soft palate (in the back of the throat) can cause obstruction of airflow into the larynx
  • A windpipe/trachea that is proportionally too narrow
  • Large tongues
  • Enlarged or everted tonsils
  • Everted tissue near the vocal cords

Oh no! My Frenchie shows the signs. What can I do?
First off, don't be concerned... you're not alone, as studies show that about 50% of French Bulldogs have clinically significant BOAS.

Secondly, the laser surgery to correct the issues is routine in our surgical center and something we do very often. The surgery usually takes less than an hour and can easily combined with a neuter/spay.

Honestly, we are ALWAYS excited to perform this surgery because we continually receive EXTREMELY positive feedback from clients about their pets breathing after the procedure. Literally, all of our clients who had this surgery performed on their pet have immediately noticed positive results.

Clients have mentioned how quietly and easily their pets breath now (reduced snoring/snorting/heavy breathing) around the house. Clients notice their pet is more playful now and are able to be more active without needing to take breaks to catch their breath. It TRULY EXCITES US to receive this feedback, and if you're pet is suffering from any of the BOAS issues, give us a call. We'd be excited to help!
