Dentistry

Here at Grant Veterinary Care, we recommend each pet should have annual dental cleaning with surgical extractions if needed. Prior to scheduling a dental cleaning under general anesthesia, we recommend a consultation with our veterinarian so she can assess your pet’s mouth and discuss what degree of periodontal disease your pet has as well and an in depth conversation of what the dental cleaning will entail. Depending your pet’s periodontal disease your pet may have a few to several teeth surgically extracted. Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats.

Pyometra

What is a pyometra?

A pyometra is a common condition where the female pet’s uterus becomes infected. This condition is an extreme emergency because the infection will rupture the pet’s uterus.  Unfortunately, this condition can occur in any intact (not spayed) female dog or cat, and randomly occurs after their heat cycle.

Types of Pyometras

  • Open: The infection is visible and discharge can be seen
  • Closed: The cervix is closed and the infection is building with the uterus

Symptoms

Your pet may exhibit the following clinical signs:

  • discharge (open pyometra)
  • vomiting
  • lethargy
  • fever

Treatment

An emergency spay procedure performed by a veterinarian is required. This procedure is not difficult for a skilled surgeon; however, it is important that the pyometra is identified and treated quickly.

Prevention

Spaying your pet before their first heat cycle (around 5 months) will prevent the possibility of this life threating condition. While we understand some pet parent’s hesitation to spaying their pet, this is just one of the many life-threatening conditions that can be prevented by spaying your pet.
