Dentistry

Here at Grant Veterinary Care, we recommend each pet should have annual dental cleaning with surgical extractions if needed. Prior to scheduling a dental cleaning under general anesthesia, we recommend a consultation with our veterinarian so she can assess your pet’s mouth and discuss what degree of periodontal disease your pet has as well and an in depth conversation of what the dental cleaning will entail. Depending your pet’s periodontal disease your pet may have a few to several teeth surgically extracted. Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in dogs and cats.

Heartworm
Let's have a quick but serious talk about Heartworm.

As much fun as we like to have on these posts, this is a serious one.

It's an unfortunate fact that we see a high number of positive cases each year.

Important facts:

1) Mosquitoes are around ALL YEAR in Hampton Roads which is considered a "heartworm hotspot"

2) Mosquitoes do not discriminate and feed off ALL breeds from the fancy Frenchies to Great Pyrenees

3) Heartworm tests only detect adult worms, which means the disease is destroying your pet's heart and lungs for at least 6 months before you see a positive test.

4) Heartworm is ridiculously expensive to treat - $1500-3500, and the treatment is very taxing on your pet's health

We love your pets and we know you do too. That’s why at GVC, we are extremely passionate about heartworm prevention. We have the unfortunate reality of seeing positive cases far too often, and it is absolutely heartbreaking to find out a pet is positive for this deadly and destructive (but preventable) disease.

There are a few recommended preventative medications, but let's be honest, we are all human and its easy to miss a dose. With that in mind, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND ProHeart 12, which is good for the entire year in a single shot. Give it a shot... It very well could save your dogs life.
